HS2
Goes to sea

The
first sea-going HS2 was successfully installed on the MV Tauranga
on the 5th November 2008. Three months ago Marine Harvest
Norway commissioned Ace Aquatec Ltd to design, build and deliver
an HS2 for its new sea-going factory ship. The machine was
required to do the following: humanely kill salmon that were
too difficult for percussive stunners, fit inside a deck space
of 3 metres by 1 metre, cope with a list of +/-5 degrees,
have a throughput of 2 Tonnes per hour and be built and delivered
within 4 months.

Nicknamed
the 'Runt Stunner' the machine has met all the criteria but
also goes beyond it in several ways: it automatically levels
itself depending on the list of the ship, it can be fully
operated from a remote location and can harvest fish of up
to 5kg at a rate of 6 Tonnes per hour. It is also the first
Ace Aquatec stunner that runs on pure sea-water which greatly
simplifies the logistics of operating at sea.
Marine
Harvest's Operations Manager, Steve Harris, commented. "We
are impressed by the simplicity of the design and the hidden
sophistication of the electronics. We have high hopes for
the Runt Stunner."
Sea Trials are scheduled later this month.
